Sameer's Blog~~~Welcome AllWelcome to Sameer's online space June 30 Last survivor of Jallianwala Bagh massacre (Shingara Singh) diesThe last known survivor of the Jallianwala bagh massacre, Shingara Singh, died in Amritsar on June 29 2009.
I did not imagine that we would still be having people who were there during the massacre (1919). It as truly a devilish act and showed to the world the true nature of the british and dispelled the notion that british were 'different' from other european colonisers and also that british rule was 'good' for India. The massacre also made many national leaders to openly condemn the rule, Many gave up their honorary titles. Many were drawn to the national movement. Youngsters like Shaheed Bhagat Singh swore on the soil that they would see to it that the brits leave the country. It took many years till Shaheed Udham Singh avenged the massacre by killing General Dyer.
The last known survivor of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, Shingara Singh, passed away here Monday. He was 113. Singh was the last surviving witness to the merciless killing of unarmed Indian protestors, including women and children, at the Jallianwala Bagh who were fired upon by British forces led by Brigadier Reginald Dyer.
He died of old age complications and illness, family members said.
Popularly called Bapu (father) Shingara Singh, the freedom fighter used to point out to his hand where he claimed that he was shot. He was in his early 20s when the incident took place April 13, 1919.

The Jallianwala Bagh is now a national memorial highlighting the sacrifice of hundreds of unknown men, women and children, including an infant, for India's freedom struggle.
June 26 Michael Jackson, King of Pop, Dead at 50Michael Jackson, 'King of Pop', at one point of time, the only name Indian public knew of western pop singers, global icon, and later a controversial figure is no more. Related link below: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/MichaelJackson/story?id=7936177&page=1 June 23 Donated blood todayI donated blood for the first time in my life today 22-June-2009 (it is beyond 'today' as of now).
I wanted to donate blood since many years, the idea came long time back, I recall during the Kargil war, I wanted to donate blood, but never got a chance to. During Deloitte's Community involvement event - Impact day, I had in mind a blood donation camp and awareness session, which was not accepted due to different reasons. I wanted to donate blood since so long...
Today was as usual, a busy day, and being a Monday more so... then heard about the blood donation activity being done in the office from my sister (my cousin sis who works in the same office), immediately wanted to go for it, but had to look at the work too... then heard from friends about it and in the evening, made up my mind to go. Was asking people if they would accompany me... people were busy with work... one fellow agreed but would join me after an hour, then finally we set off. We waited for quite some time.... till we finally got our chance. We had to fill forms, sit patiently, let the doctor examine us etc. etc. before we actually went and laid down to donate blood.
The doctor asked me my weight (Maybe he thought I looked weak) and asked me when I ate, now I did not want to exactly tell when I ate, I had eaten my meal at around 12:00 PM and it was about 8:00 PM then, quite a big gap... but in between I had some bits of Swiss chocolate which my dad got from UK and chocolate being an energy rich food, I thought I was ready. I told the doctor I had snacks couple of hours back.
Finally I laid down and the needle was inserted... yes, it is a bit painful, but it is worth it... especially the first time... the person who was administering it asked me, if it was my first time (he was looking for needle marks on my arm) and instead of my right arm, they took blood from my left arm.
It took some time and it was over, they gave us juice and biscuits to replenish, I went up and shared a piece of chocolate with my friend (for the required energy) and then proceeded to have my dinner, which got delayed by about 40 minutes :). And when I went back to my bay (before going to dinner or sharing the chocolate), my colleagues appreciated us and some of them went later to donate blood.
I felt great after donating blood. I wanted to do this since many years and today I did it..... It gives a sense of happiness and achievement..... (No wonder why I am blogging about it... and in this time of the night) Since I now know what it is to give blood, I am ready* whenever it is needed for someone. *=conditions apply June 13 Dad’s trip to UKDad left for UK on a week long official work. He left today evening and will be back next Sunday.
------ Dad came back on Sunday June 21st. Swine Flu is pandemicIndia has already got some cases of Swine Flu. Hyderabad has 3-4 reported cases. From Rediff.com Swine Flu is now a pandemic: What you must know The World Health Organisation on Thursday declared the swine flu outbreak was a pandemic, the first in more than 40 years. The announcement was scientific confirmation that a new flu virus has emerged and is quickly circling the globe. It will trigger drug companies to speed up production of a vaccine and prompt governments to devote more money to containing the virus. Last month, several countries urged WHO not to declare a pandemic, its highest alert level and essentially raising the outbreak's status to a worldwide epidemic, fearing it would spark mass panic. ….Deleted…. June 11 Beware of fake Chinese ‘Made in India’ drugsChinese are known to be experts in copy-pasting. Be it aircraft designs, guns, luxury products or virtually anything… and now the news of fake ‘made in India’ drugs found in Nigeria. Chinese passing off fake drugs as ‘Made in India’ Are fake drugs manufactured in China being pushed into various African countries with the `Made in India' tag? The Indian government has Last week, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria issued a press release stating that a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceuticals labeled `Made in India' were, in fact, found to have been produced in China. New Delhi has registered ``strong protest'' with the Chinese mission and China's foreign trade ministry, according to sources in the commerce ministry. June 05 10 years of my emailIt was ten years back, on June 05 1999, when I created my first email. I still use that email and it was my primary email, till I switched over to Gmail. It still has my old contacts and I still use it for certain group of friends/relatives. In fact, it is the Id with which I sign in to my blog. I created the email address with the help of a person called Ram when I was undergoing training at CMC institute. Email communication revolutionised the way I communicated and yes, it had brought many changes in me, many positive, though I can’t explain them properly, but yes, it has brought a feel-good sort of feeling… Though I have created many email addresses after that and this email is not the frequently checked one, there is always something to the first one…. the first email (esp. when it is still being used) As a continuation of some of my blog entries pertaining to some happenings 10 years back and some incidents from my diary of 1999 and the significance of year 2009, this was an addition…. :) June 01 Last survivor of "unsinkable" Titanic dies at 97Millvina Dean was the youngest passenger on RMS Titanic, just nine weeks old when she was wrapped in a sack and lowered from the sinking ship into a lifeboat bobbing on the frigid North Atlantic. Dean lived to become the disaster's last survivor. She died Sunday at the age of 97 in Southampton, the English port from which her family sailed on the ill-fated liner, intending to begin a new life in the United States. GM Files BankruptcyThe Legendary GM, the biggest of the Big-3 of Detroit has finally filed for Bankruptcy. From Bloomberg. General Motors Corp., the world’s largest carmaker until its 77-year reign ended last year, filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. with a plan to create a 21st-century company that can compete in world markets. GM reported $82.3 billion in assets and $172.8 billion in debt. The U.S. government will bankroll the transformation of the 100-year-old automaker, a victim of tumbling sales and higher gas prices. The U.S. plans to convert much of its $50 billion of loans to a 60 percent stake in the new entity. Today’s filing in New York coincides with a deadline for GM to convince a government auto task force that it could reorganize out of court through debt and cost cutting. May 29 Racial attack on Indian students in AustraliaThere has been a series of attacks on Indian students studying in Australia. Many students were attacked and Shravan Kumar, 25, from AP is battling for his life. Indian students form the second highest number of overseas students in Australian Universities. But things are still like usual, no strong words from our Government (As say another country of our size would), no serious action…. (PM not losing his ‘sleep’), it looks like as if they are waiting for things to get back to normal on their own. From rediff.com India on Friday said the spate of violent attacks targeting its students in Australia should stop immediately and asserted that authorities here should come up with a solution to prevent such incidents from recurring. Indian High Commissioner Sujata Singh, who met premier of Victoria John Brumby and top police and educational officials of the province, said there is a 'racist element in some of the attacks' but many of them were 'opportunistic'. "The fact of the matter is that whatever the motive behind the attacks, they seem to be Indian students," she told a crowded press conference in Melbourne. Thanks for visiting!
